The settlement of Elounda is one of the largest and most famous resorts in Crete. The goal of the study was to radically transform the current image of the area, so that in the future the harbor will comprise a modern and integrated complex. The contemporary era we live in reinforces the need for the appropriation of the communal spaces and the overthrow of the individuality that has so far identified the public areas. This is achieved by enhancing the natural environment, both in terms of uses and looks.
The design focuses on a central core, the "water square", which consists of three circular cornices that embrace the existing port and opens to Spinalonga. NA square is offered for the organization of events, while for the service of the shops it is proposed to construct a single shelter that extends to the pier. On the pier we suggested an explicitly designed kiosk to serve the visitors of Spinalonga Island. At the deck's edge, the guests can rest in the specially designed chaise-longues.
To the west and towards the church where we suggested the renovation of the bell tower and its unrestricted access, as it can work as an observatory with a stunning view. To the north, a playground and an amphitheater are formed. This sector can host a variety of cultural events and ensures unobstructed views of the entire area and the Spinalonga. In addition, the visitor will find an information booth, a refreshments kiosk, and a small café.
In the first frieze of the central core, and in proximity to the harbor's monument, the visitor encounters a series of organized shelters. These structures will accommodate the present shops, the bus and the taxi stops and two kiosks. Planting has been integrated in all the proposed shelters. Along the second molding, we designed rest areas organized in a circle, alternated with vertical lighting elements. The proposed cycling routes from Elounda to Plaka and the picturesque Ano Elounda follow the same circular arrangement of the central core.
Water jets are proposed at the entrance of the port, that they redefine its circular shape towards the sea. The jets continue to the adjacent beach and are facing towards the island of Spinalonga. To harmonize the existing restaurant Vritomartes, our team proposed to create a glass shell with running water, which will generate the feeling of a waterfall and will emphasize even more its privileged position into the sea. Finally, the installation of a wind turbine was proposed that would refer to the traditional windmills of the Lassithi region.
Along the promenade we meet small circular "islets". These islets are made of various materials (sand, glass, pebbles, planting, etc.) and can host events and works of art. We also designed benches, made of glass and mosaic tiles, that feel like they have been cut off from the ground and are floating. Finally, all routes end at the pier - terrace, where guests can unbend on the chaise-longues and enjoy the view to the Spinalonga.
